What’s the recipe for a second chance at love?

After six blissful years with scientist boyfriend Owen, Bella Beecham was convinced he was about to pop the question she’d been longing to hear. Instead, he accepted a prestigious job in California and left England without a backwards glance. Now, Owen’s back in the village of Saffron Sweeting, and appears to be more eligible than ever. Bella’s determined that the man of her dreams won’t slip through her fingers again.

But her plans to tone up, trim down, and tempt Owen back into her life prove bittersweet. Although Bella’s talent for baking wins her new friends, her tasty treats have a disconcerting tendency to sabotage her own intentions. And as her increasingly bold attempts to recapture Owen’s heart stumble, Bella must question whether she’s chasing a guy who wants to be caught.

A British romantic comedy featuring both familiar characters and fresh faces, Sweet Pursuits explores how a young woman seeking her soulmate must first learn to love herself.

Sweet Pursuits a Saffron Sweeting novel eBook Pauline Wiles

I fell in love with Pauline Wiles's first book, Saving Saffron Sweeting, for many reasons, one of which is the charming English village at the center of the novel: Saffron Sweeting. Book Two, Secrets in the Sky, a stand-alone romantic comedy, is set two years after the first book and features many of the characters we came to know and love in Saving Saffron Sweeting while introducing us to new characters (the courageous Sophie) as our knowledge of this quiet village and its inhabitants evolves. Having read and loved Pauline's first two stand-alones, I wasn't surprised when I fell in love all over again with a new cast of characters, living their lives and pursuing their desires in this quaint little English village.

In Book Three, Sweet Pursuits, Bella's grand plan to win Owen back gets muddled the more she learns about him and the more she learns about herself. There are twists and turns, quite a few surprises, and many lessons for Bella to learn along her journey. Bella's a very relatable character. She's sweet, vulnerable, and a bit too hard on herself (aren't we all?), traits that combine in interesting ways and ultimately, lead to insightful soul searching I believe will resonate with readers. I think a huge strength in this book is the support network that surrounds Bella. As a reader of Pauline's first two books, I loved that many of the members of Bella's support circle were characters from the previous books. I think this gave continuity to the previous storylines and led me further into the fictional reality of this town.

As I read, I couldn't help but think about the enormous premium many women place on marriage and the pursuit of a husband. I also noticed Pauline's trademark "balancing act" between American and British culture - an aspect of her writing that truly sets her apart from others in the romantic comedy genre. Sweet Pursuits is a love story, yes, but it's also a great testament to the value of friendships, of trying new things, and being honest with yourself and honest about those you see before you. Five stars.

Sweet Pursuits a Saffron Sweeting novel eBook Pauline Wiles Reviews

Funny and engaging. Even though the main character is a bit needy, you still want to root for her! And she has great friends.
Hello Pauline. We both loved the book - Marg thinks best so far in the series. We enjoyed the humour, the character development, the culinary delights and learning more about Saffron Sweeting. The glossary of British terms was familiar to us Kiwis as we use most of these terms ourselves. Keep writing please and we look forward to book 4 hopefully in the not too distant future.
Kind regards to you and Darius

I've been a huge fan of Pauline Wiles' writing and recommend her books to you without hesitation. Bella and Owen are people you can picture in your mind, which to me is the mark of a great writer (I can see and hear them as I read). There's a story to be told here, and Wiles does it well, intertwining a true journey of self-discovery with her usual charm and wit. I do wish the little village of Saffron Sweeting was real!
Ms. Wiles has her finger on the pulse of her readers with her latest novel, Sweet Pursuits. The characters are engaging, lovable and come to life in Saffron Sweeting the bucolic English country side village where her stories are set. Sweet Pursuits grabs the readers attention with the first page and if you manage to set the book down it won't be for long. Filled with old and new friends, sweets (literally), a half-marathon and a broken heart yet to be mended Ms. Wiles has magic flowing from the tip of her pen - or should I say, keyboard. As Ms. Wiles' followers we all hope that magical pen of hers lives a very long and productive life telling the tales from Saffron Sweeting. Thank you for such a wonderful read! We will be eagerly awaiting the next installment from Saffron Sweeting. Highly recommend all of Ms. Wiles books to date.
Having now finished all three of the ‘Saffron Sweeting’ novels, I have to admit to missing the place. These novels are like your favourite soap opera you become invested in the characters and feel you could fit right in in the community if you moved there tomorrow. Don’t expect fast-paced action. These are cosy, read on the beach or in front of the fire tales, full of fun characters taking care of each other, romantic fails and successes, surprises from the past and lots of British humour. The author weaves characters from previous stories in well, though each book stands alone. I hope Ms. Wiles has more novels planned so I can visit ‘Saffron Sweeting’ again in the future.
I understand this is part of a serial, but I had no trouble following the plot without having read the previous books. The characters were sweetly realized, each with their own unique personality, and it was interesting to get a British take on emigre Americans. That said, I confess that I began to skim starting about halfway through the book as Bella's dreariness and inadequacy dragged on. I don't doubt that it was a true representation of a particular response to a painful break-up, and that Bella's weight and her obsession with it were believable manifestations of insecurity after being cruelly dumped. Having gone through that with Bella made it fun to watch her pull out of her tailspin, become more confident, and develop new relationships. But it was too little too late for me. By the time she began her recovery I was so tired of the parade of misery that I just wanted it all to be over. In spite of that, I would consider getting another book in the series in hopes that a more cheerful heroine wouldn't overshadow my enjoyment of the other characters or bog down the plot.
