The Doone family have ruled the Empire for thousands of years, bringing stability and prosperity. When a mission to receive a new planet into the Empire ends with an attempt on his life, Emperor Alexander must fight to protect his family and Empire from enemies within. On present day Earth, Karen Mcleod marks the end of a relationship with a holiday to the Isle of Skye, little knowing that a chance meeting is about to change her life forever. Two different civilisations are about to meet in an epic tale of war, duty and love across the millennia, in Imperium Betrayal, the first part of the Imperium trilogy.
Imperium Betrayal Book One in the Imperium Trilogy eBook Paul M Calvert
Imperium: Betrayal is Paul Calvert's first novel and is a fairly good book that has a good balance between the action and the backstory of the main characters: Emperor Alexander, Empress Christine, their son Adam and Karen, a doctor at a hospital in Scotland, planet Earth. Just to be clear for future readers, the Empire referred in this book is run by humans, but not Earth humans. In otherwords, the Empire humans have developed quite separately from us. Without giving away too much of the plot line, the Empire, which has existed for around 4,000 years, finds itself fighting against some rebel elements who unsuccessfully try and assassinate Emperor Alexander. In an effort to protect his son, Adam, Alexander sends him off to a trusted member of the Empire's space navy. However, before Adam can reach his destination, an accident in his ship's drive leaves him off course and in a part of space that is unknown to the Empire, but luckily it is close to Earth. I have to say I did like the story-line overall, some of the tech was interesting and the main characters were also good. However, I did feel the book was a tale of two stories - Emperor Alexander and his wife getting to the bottom of the rebellion and who is leading it; and Adam on Earth romancing Karen. I have to say that I liked the parts of the story that were focussed on Adam and Karen - there were some great comedic moments as Adam had to come to grips with Earth idioms and culture. There were some chapters that I felt didn't contribute to moving the story forward, particularly chapter 2 which was a backstory of the Empire's origins and would have been better at the end of the book in an appendix; and there were a couple of chapters that saw Christine having breakfast with her staff at the palace and a practice battle session with the palace guards - it teally didn't contribute anything to the story. Overall, I liked the book and I am looking forward to the next book in the series just to see where the author is going to take his characters.Product details
